Trips around the pension – Bavaria

(Drive time from the pension to each destination is shown in parentheses.)

⛰️ Hohenbogen (25 min)

Hohenbogen is an approximately 8 km long ridge in the Bavarian Forest and one of the closest Bavarian destinations for a family trip. The summit (1,079 m) offers beautiful views of Arber, Osser, Kaitersberg and Voithenberg. In good weather, you can even see the Alps.

How to get up

We recommend taking the “retro” two‑seater chairlift — the hill is quite steep, especially for small children. You can also walk up, but the path is steeper.

What awaits you at the top

  • stunning panoramas
  • a lookout tower
  • a NATO base (viewable from the outside as an interesting landmark)
  • a mountain hut with refreshments

Attractions for children

One of the biggest summer attractions is the 750 m long toboggan run with 16 curves. There are also several small attractions for children near the lower chairlift station.

In winter, Hohenbogen operates as a smaller ski resort — ideal for children or beginners.

🦊 Lohberg Zoo – Bayerwald‑Tierpark (30 min)

Lohberg Zoo is a forest ZOO covering 10 hectares and focuses on animals native to the Bavarian Forest. You’ll see wolves, foxes, beavers, otters, deer, owls, lynxes and many more.

About the route

The circular path is 1.5 km long. Some parts are a little steep but manageable even for younger children.

Children’s favourite part

You can buy feed pellets at the entrance — children can feed selected animals such as goats or donkeys, often the highlight of the whole visit.

The ZOO also includes a playground and a restaurant.

Bonus tip

From the ZOO, you can take a small train to the Little Arber Lake. And if you want to make a full family day out of it, the Osserbad Aquapark in Lam (7 min) is perfect — indoor and outdoor pools, slides and water attractions.

🏔️ Großer Arber & Great Arber Lake (40 min)

Großer Arber is the highest mountain in the Bavarian Forest (1,456 m) and a fantastic destination for families all year round. The area is fully accessible and suitable for prams.

How to get there

Set navigation to Arber Bergbahn Talstation, Bayerisch Eisenstein. There is a restaurant and a small playground at the lower cable‑car station.

Cable car to the top

A six‑seater cabin lift takes you to the summit, and prams can be transported as well. After arriving, you can take a panoramic lift down to the Eisensteiner Hütte, where you’ll find two restaurants and a beautiful wooden playground with mountain views.

Summit loop

The loop around the summit is approx. 2 km long and suitable for prams (although slightly steeper in a few spots). The views from the top are breathtaking.

Next stop: Great Arber Lake

Drive down to the lake (5 min) or walk there with older children. The lake loop is 2 km long. There is a lovely restaurant — Arberseehaus — and in summer you can rent pedal boats.

🐺 Falkenstein National Park Centre (40 min)

The centre consists of three parts and is ideal for families with young children and prams.

What you’ll discover

  • a Stone Age cave with replicas of the famous Chauvet cave paintings
  • animal enclosures featuring lynxes, wolves, Przewalski horses and aurochs
  • the “House of Wilderness” — interactive exhibitions, a large children’s zone

The whole loop is approx. 2.5 km long, fully accessible and free of charge.

Bonus

Only 10 minutes away is Ludwigsthal train station — you can take the Waldbahn train here directly from Železná Ruda–Alžbětín.

⚒️ Silbergwerk – Silver Mine (50 min)

One of the most exciting experiences for both children and adults — a visit to a 12th‑century silver mine.

Getting there

The mine entrance is in the middle of the mountain — you can either walk 500 m uphill or take the cable car.

About the tour

  • lasts 45 minutes
  • guided only in German
  • you’ll put on a mining coat and helmet (children too!)

Inside you’ll see tunnels, mining carts, old tools, and breathe cool, mineral‑rich air. Children are usually completely fascinated.

Important

Avoid the last tour of the day — at least 4 adults are required for safety reasons, and the tour may be cancelled if the group is too small.

What else is here

At the lower cable‑car station, you’ll find a playground, a restaurant and a summer toboggan run. Bring warmer clothes — it’s chilly inside the mine.

🎢 Churpfalzpark (50 min)

A botanical‑amusement park covering 10 hectares, perfect for families with children.

What you’ll find

  • roller coasters
